Physiological and Psychological Effects of Thermally Stressful UH-6O simulator Cockpit Conditions on Aviators Wearing Standard and Encumbered Flight Uniforms

This is a ARMY AEROMEDICAL RESEARCH LAB FORT RUCKER AL report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A661023. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study evaluated the effects of the four combinations of unencumbered MOPPO aviator battle dress uniform (ABDU) and encumbered MOPP4 over ABDU flight ensembles in cool (70 degrees F, 50 percent relative humidity (RH)) and hot (100 degrees F, 50 percent RH) UH-60 cockpit conditions. This report describes the physiological and psychological responses. The most striking, operationally relevant result was that none of the crews in the encumbered MOPP4 hot condition were able to complete the first two 2-hour sorties movements. The results of this evaluation suggest that future rotary-wing aviator flight uniform components should be designed to be lighter weight and allow greater evaporation of sweat. Methods should be sought to improve fit and comfort, particularly for the mask and helmet combination, as well as prevent pressure discomfort over the back due to the life raft. The 11.7 lb ballistic protective plate also should be lighter weight and reduced in thickness. Forced dry air microclimate cooling into the ensemble should be considered for reducing heat accumulation in the encumbered MOPP4 aviator ensemble by enhancing evaporative cooling and thereby increasing endurance times during hot weather operations.

Space Shuttle Discovery Model

Space Shuttle Discovery Model

Space Shuttle Discovery (Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-103) is one of the three currently operational orbiters in the Space Shuttle fleet of NASA, the space agency of the United States. (The other two are Atlantis and Endeavour.) When first flown in 1984, Discovery became the third operational orbiter, and is now the oldest orbiter in service. Discovery has performed both research and International Space Station (ISS) assembly missions.

The spacecraft takes its name from four British ships of exploration named Discovery, primarily HMS Discovery, one of the ships commanded by Captain James Cook during his third and final major voyage, 1776–1779. Others include Henry Hudson's Discovery, which he used in 1610–1611 to search for a Northwest Passage; the HMS Discovery, one of the ships which took Captain George Nares' British Arctic Expedition of 1875–1876 to the North Pole; and RRS Discovery, a Royal Geographical Society research vessel which, under the command of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton, was the main ship of the 1901–1904 "Discovery Expedition" to Antarctica which is still preserved as a museum.

Discovery was the shuttle that launched the Hubble Space Telescope. The second and third Hubble service missions were also conducted by Discovery. It has also launched the Ulysses probe and three TDRS satellites. Discovery has been chosen twice as the return to flight orbiter, first in 1988 as the return to flight orbiter after the 1986 Challenger disaster, and then for the twin return to flight missions in July 2005 and July 2006 after the 2003 Columbia disaster. Discovery also carried Project Mercury astronaut John Glenn, who was 77 at the time, back into space during STS-95 on October 29, 1998, making him the oldest human being to venture into space.

Had the planned STS-62-A mission from Vandenberg Air Force Base in 1986 for the United States Department of Defense gone ahead, Discovery would have flown it.

Discovery has flown 38 flights, completed 5,247 orbits, and has spent 322 days in orbit. Discovery is the orbiter fleet leader, having flown more flights than any other orbiter in the fleet, including four in 1985 alone. Discovery flew all three "return to flight" missions after the Challenger and Columbia disasters: STS-26 in 1988, STS-114 in 2005, and STS-121 in 2006. Discovery is scheduled to fly the second to last space shuttle mission STS-133 on Nov. 1, 2010.

North Island Kokako

North Island Kokako

The North Island Kokako is now endangered, with an estimated 750 pairs in existence.

The Kokako has a beautiful, clear, organ-like song, its call can carry for kilometres. Breeding pairs sing together in a bell-like duet for up to an hour in the early morning. Different populations in different parts of the North Island have distinctly different songs.
The Kokako is a poor flier and seldom flies more than 100 metres. The wings of this species are relatively short and rounded. It prefers to hop and leap from branch to branch on its powerful grey legs. Its diet consists of leaves, fern fronds, flowers, fruit and invertebrates.
